3 Steps to dreaming

It was only a few years ago that I realized I had lost track of my dreams. It felt like they were under slabs of concrete. We all have busy lives and it’s easy enough for our dreams to become buried.

However I became convinced through reading scripture that my dreams mattered enormously to God. The bible talks a lot about our desires and dreams and how important they are to Him.

Psalm 37:5,6 Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to Him, trust in Him, and he will do it.

There are not a lot of conditions in this verse! It seems that if we “delight in God” and “Commit our ways to Him” He will give us the desires of our heart. It’s a great promise – how amazing is God, he’s such a good Father.

Proverbs 13:12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life.

We were not created for “hope deferred” but desires fulfilled. Deferred hope is not good for the soul, it makes us sick – that’s what the bible says.

So what does a tree of life look like?

It looks very alive! It’s healthy, growing and bearing fruit. A healthy tree is a great picture of the way God wants our lives to be.

Jesus said “my desire is that you bear much fruit” Why? Because when we are bearing fruit, we are feel full of joy and great about life, we also bless others, and this also brings God glory. (John 15).

In the hours before His death, Jesus only talked to the disciples about the most important things. One of Jesus expressed desires for them was that they be VERY fruitful … “when I’m gone, I want you all to bear much fruit” (John 15).  More fruit – more blessings for others and more glory for God.

So how can we be more fruitful?

To be more fruitful, we have to be healthy trees – and this happens as our “desires are fulfilled”.  Yes – our dreams are very important to God.

3 Easy Steps to easy steps to discovering your Dreams:

1. Delight yourself in God. In other words, spend some time in His presence dreaming.  When I first started to dream, I would lie on my back and ask God to awaken all the dreams and desires of my heart. (someone gave me a card recently with a dog lying on it’s back dreaming … and it reminded me of what I do when I dream!).  Invite the Holy Spirit to be your dream partner.  Warning: This is revolutionary and it will change your life!

 2. Write your dreams down. (Habakkuk 2:2). I bought a new book and wrote on the outside “Dream Journal”. It’s now full of dreams – sometimes I draw, other times I write or do a mind-map.  Get in touch with every amazing desire in your heart – go for it! God wants you to get excited about them all.

3. When you have recorded a few dreams … choose one and start to make it happen. A dream without action is a fantasy. I always ask God ‘which dream is right for me to start now”? When I sense which one it is, I ask this question : “God what’s the first step I need to take with this dream?”  He will tell you. Then continue taking steps towards your dream. As you see your dreams fulfilled, you will start to become a tree of life.

Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when dreams come true, there is life and joy (Proverbs 13:12 Msg)
