Sweet Dreams…

Recently I read the verse “He gives his beloved sleep” (Psalm 127:2).  I stared at the verse and then thought … Wow, how little this describes my experience!  I’ve been sleep deprived for far too long. I don’t know how it happened, but for the last few years my sleeping patterns are really, really poor. Often I will just get a couple of hours.  There’s no one “big” reason I can put it down to, I don’t know what keeps me awake … just random thoughts and poor sleeping habits.

So I’ve decided to do something about it, especially because I know so many health problems can be attributed to lack of sleep, such as high blood pressure and being overweight.

I chose to go right back to the basics of good sleep hygiene. This includes things like making sure I get some exercise each day, not eating late at night, not looking at “screens” close to bed time, (I don’t have my iPhone next to my bed now), having a cup of camomile tea after dinner, a warm shower before bed … and all of these things are important and help!

But I also decided to take hold of the verse mentioned above “He gives his beloved sleep” and see it as a promise for my life.  I used this verse and some others to make a crafted Declaration which I’ve started saying before I go to bed.  And I’ve got to say I’m over the moon (no pun intended) to see a HUGE improvement in my sleeping pattern!!

I say this Declaration every night with intentionality and in FAITH.  Now that I’ve experienced such a breakthrough, I’m reminded once again of how powerful it is to confess the word of God.  Isaiah 55:11 says “His words will NOT return empty, but accomplish that for which they are purposed”.   All of His promises are “Yes” and “Amen” (2 Corinthians 1:20) and as we confess them, they profoundly influence our lives (including, in this case, my sleep).

I’ve put the Declaration which I say below.  If you’re having difficulty sleeping, you may like to join me.  If it doesn’t happen for you the first night, keep saying it. Good sleep is your rightful inheritance and God is faithful!

Sweet Dreams!

Sleeping Declaration:

Father God, you have promised to give your beloved sleep (Psalm 127:2).  Tonight I claim the gift and blessing of great sleep as my inheritance.  In Jesus name, I take authority over ALL sleep disturbances, and command ALL irregular sleeping patterns to cease (Luke 10:17).   I DECLARE they are no longer my portion.  I DECREE perfect peace over myself as I sleep.  Abba, daddy God, tonight I rest completely in your loving embrace (Ro. 8:15).  I DECLARE favour over all the events of this day, and over every relationship because You have said that You work all things together for good for those who love you (Ro. 8:32).   I cast all my cares upon you (1 Pet. 5:7).  I release forgiveness to any person who has hurt me (Matt. 6:9).  Let your healing love restore my heart. I DECLARE that you are faithful and I will trust you with every detail of my life (Prov. 3:5).  I choose not to worry about tomorrow because You have promised to take care of tomorrow (Matthew 6:25). I cover my mind with the oil of joy, my body with the garment of righteousness, and my spirit with your glorious presence.  I SPEAK perfect peace to my whole being, body, soul and spirit. I DECLARE that this night, angels have been charged to watch over me while I sleep (Ps 91:9). I DECREE quality sleep, and quantity sleep and that in the morning when I wake up, my body, mind and spirit will feel refreshed, revived, alert and strong (2 Tim 1:7). I DECLARE that you are good, and in you I am always MORE than a conqueror for every situation in Christ Jesus. (Ro. 8:37) Amen.
