What do you want?

1 Kings 3:5-7 “At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream and said “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.” Solomon answered, O Lord you have made me King in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. I am here among the people you have chosen, a great people, who are too numerous to count. So give me a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?”

The context for this passage is that Solomon had just ascended the throne following King David’s death.  It was an enormous role for someone so young. Clearly, he felt overwhelmed and hugely burdened by the responsibilities of being king saying “I am only a little child, and I do not know how to carry out my duties…”

However, we immediately see that God has a plan ready to help Solomon. He makes him this extraordinary offer “Ask for WHATEVER you want me to give you.”

As I read this passage this morning, I was struck by two things.

The first is that God turned up with the extraordinary offer to help Solomon, simply because He LOVED him. God was 100% committed to him because Solomon was his son.   And as a son, He was offering Solomon ABSOLUTE ACCESS TO ALL THE RESOURCES OF HEAVEN. (that’s amazing!!!)  Why? Because GOD WANTED HIM TO SUCCEED in his Kingdom assignment of ruling over Israel.

The second thing I noticed was how HUGELY EXTRAVAGANT THE OFFER WAS!

It was an open-ended – there were no limitations whatsoever.  Solomon was invited to ask God for “WHATEVER” he wanted!

The vastness of God’s offer made me reflect upon this …… How often do we limit or even insult God by the smallness of our thinking?  I concluded that it’s far too often!  God is magnified when miracles happen; He gets all the glory when we ask for things that are not possible in our own strength.  “Whatever” is HUGE!.

As we start out a new year, remember that just as God loved Solomon and wanted to help him succeed, he also LOVES YOU and is committed to YOUR DREAMS. He absolutely is – 100%! All of heaven’s resources are available to you because you are a son or daughter of God, and a co-heir with Christ. You carry his authority – so speak like the son or daughter that you are. Let faith arise in your heart, it’s time to stop thinking small in 2014!

This morning as I was reading this passage, I felt God say that I was to put out to you the same invitation He gave Solomon, which is “Ask for WHATEVER you want me to give you”.    In Solomon’s case, He asked God for wisdom. This so pleased God that He gave him wealth and honour as well.

However, this is now your time to think about YOUR situation and YOUR dreams…. What do you want to ask God for so that you succeed in your kingdom dreams?

Remember, there are no limits…. So be bold!

I invite you to take a minute to finish the sentence below. Once you do, write the sentence in your journal and look at it at the end of 2014! (It may take some time for you to decide, but imagine how different 2014 will be as you step out in faith).

God you have invited me “Ask for WHATEVER you want me to give you”. So I now ask you for “………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….….”

Hi Carolyn, great message. Ephesians 3 v 20. Above all you can dare, ask or think God is able to give you. Miracles are now.God is Yes and Amen when we speak out his word and believe in his miracles. Heavens resources are ready to be poured out for us. Just believe, claim it out aloud and wait on God.
